- Mission

Contribute to the consolidation of responsible fishery management to recover the biodiversity and productivity of the artisanal fisheries of the Yucatan Peninsula by facilitating collaborative processes and shared actions throughout fish replenishment zones.

- Vision

The Kanan Kay Alliance is a leading cross-sector initiative that promotes healthy small-scale fisheries, fosters food security, and benefits the coastal communities of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Goal: Increase the biomass of species of commercial interest by at least 30% within fish replenishment zones.

Establishment decree of the first network of Fishery Refuge Zones in Quintana Roo, requested by the Cozumel Fishing Cooperative and accompanied by members of the Kanan Kay Alliance in Espiritu Santo Bay, within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

2012

Decree of the Fishery Refuge in the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve, led by the Fishing Cooperatives Andrés Quintana Roo, Banco Chinchorro, and Langosteros del Caribe.

2013

Decree of four Fishery Refuge Zones in Punta Herrero, Quintana Roo, within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, requested by José María Azcorra Fishing Cooperative.

Decree of the Fishery Refuge in Akumal, Quintana Roo, promoted by the Fishing Cooperative Pescadores de Tulum, with a six-year term, to favor biological processes and habitat preservation.

2015

Decree of a network of Fishery Refuge Zones in Ascensión Bay in Quintana Roo, within the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, led by Vigía Chico Fishing Cooperative, for the protection of grouper aggregation areas.

2016

Renewal of the Fishery Refuge Zone decreed in María Elena in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve for five years.

2017

Decree of the Fishery Refuge Zone in the Nizuc Channel, Quintana Roo, promoted by the Cooperative “U-KIN Cancun”.

2018

Renewal the Fishery Refuge Zone Decree in Banco Chinchorro for five more years to recover fishing productivity.

2019

Decree of a Fishery Refuge Zone in Punta Herrero, Quintana Roo, at the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, requested by the José María Azcorra Fishing Cooperative.

Prolongation of the Fishery Refuge Zone Decree in front of Akumal, Quintana Roo for three years, promoted by the Cooperativa Pescadores de Tulum, to favor biological processes and habitat preservation.
